3.0.6 on same machine as FS4?

Postby k brown » Tue Jul 18, 2023 6:31 am

Sorry if this has come up before, but do I remember correctly that 3.0.6 cannot be installed on a computer that already has FS4 (I have 3.0.9 Beta3) on it; requires a partitioned drive (which I don't know how to do)?

My trusty old Lenovo R61e has started acting up, and I fear the drive may be on it's last legs. I have a much newer Dell with Win 10 on it, with which I've been using FS4 to generate 64bit plugs of my projects. If the Thinkpad dies, the Dell is all I'd have to build stuff with. Would be great if 3.0.9 could be on it as well, for constructing, and just use FS4 to make 64bit dlls.

Thanks

You could have both just have it in two separate folders

Got it installed - works OK, but for one wrinkle I've never experienced before - 3.0.6 won't make a vst. It's goes thru the motions, with no warnings or anything, but the dll never shows up where it was directed. I have to open the schem in FS4 and generate the 32bit plug that way.

Anyone ever experienced this?

I guess I would try reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013
Second thing to try would be to create a new additional user account on the computer, login with that and test...

I only have 3.06 on my second laptop... But I use FS4 and 3.08 on this laptop... But I haven't used an installer for FS4 (does the Alpha come with an installer?). In that case it might be when using installer for FS4 which writes something in the registry, or overwrites files that messes with things?

Only third culprit I can think of is maybe Windows caching system for faster loading... But don't know if any FS4 or 3.06 resource files are ever cached, and if so... wether they use any of the same files. Unlikely caching is the problem.

I guess I should clarify that FS4 was installed first, then 3.0.6 much later; but 3.0.6 wasn't 'installed', just copied over from another laptop - maybe that's the problem, I should instead run an actual install.

Yes. 3.0.6 HAS to be installed, as it relies on information that's written to the registry during installation. FS 4 in its current Alpha form has this information hardcoded, so doesn't rely on the registry. At release, FS4 will also make use of the registry (to allow user defined paths), but for now it's
1) Install 3.0.6
2) Place FS4

and both will co-exist without issues.

Thanks - I'll give it a go.

Do you think it will be neccessary to remove FS4, install 3.0.6, then replace FS4? That makes me nervous.

No, you don't need to remove FS4. But it is important that you remove your 3.0.6 copy completely, before doing a fresh install.

No need to be nervous, once 3.0.6 was properly installed, everything will work fine :)
