The Quilcom SIM-FBK: Feedback needed?

Hi all!

Someone suggested I have a go at simulating guitar feedback, so I did!

After much experimentation I found that using Martin’s Phase Vocoder pitch shifter was easily the best way forward when set to create integer harmonic intervals for the feedback sound. I don’t think anyone will be fooled into thinking it’s like real feedback used by a skilled player, but I’m quite pleased with it as an effect. If anyone here is an actual guitarist I’d love to get some “feedback”.

That is quite a cool gadget, Spogg! I tried it with a guitar, and it does sound like a real feedback in the low registers. However, I prefer to play it with the synth, with manual feerback control via the mod wheel. So much fun!

Thanks Martin!

The big problem I guess is getting the sustain required which is why I suggested a compressor would be needed. I can imagine the higher notes would still not last long enough though.

Sustain is not so much the problem - with a compressor or distortion or both I can get all sustain that is necessary. No, the issue is that guitar amps/cabinets do not deliver much output power in the high frequency range. Therefore, high notes would typically feed back at the fundamental frequency or f2 at most, while lower notes might feed back at f5 or more.

Interesting information Martin.

So to get that right, the harmonic ratio chosen would depend on the pitch of the note played. Tricky!
