After a long binge ... I decided to start working again with distortion, this is my algorithm that gave good results, maybe you will help something to improve!

Interestingly, I also work right now with a distortion. But I can not automatically restore the volume.

if you want to take this further I would recommend adding some pre and post distortion filtering options.
